カントリー、ブルース、そしてブリティッシュ・ロック。この3つの要素を取り入れて作り出された独特な「サザン・サウンド」が魅力で、「ロック史上初のパワー・バラード」と評される曲。
今回は Lynyrd Skynyrd (レーナード・スキナード) の曲「Free Bird」を翻訳いたしました！
「Free Bird」は1973年、レーナード・スキナードが出した初のアルバム「Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd」(Lynyrd Skynyrd)に収録された曲で、1974年にゴールドディスクに認定、シングルカットされてからはビルボード・ホット100で19位という記録を残しました。そしてこの曲は、交通事故により24歳でこの世を去ったあのオールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドの兄、デュアン・オールマンさんに捧げた曲でもあります。
レーナード・スキナードといえば1977年に起きた飛行機事故もありました。この燃料切れによる墜落事故により、ヴォーカルを務めたロニーさん(29歳)と、ギタリストのスティーヴさん(28歳)、バックシンガー1名が命を落としました。バンドの全盛期でもありました。事故後バンドは解散しましたが、ロニーさんの弟ドニーさんがバンド後継の遺志の下再結成され「38 Special」の名で活動を続けています。
短い詩の中に込められた想いを、一羽の気高い鳥が空の彼方へずっと飛んでいく様に、曲の最後の最後まで歌い継ぐギターソロに心を打ちます。
